2013…The Dramatic Finish!

2013 LukeOlympic Grand Champions: Norfolk-in-Chance (Ryan & Jessica Tracy)
Runner-Ups: Team TNT (Mike Thursam & Jeff Snopkowski)

(Writing this nine months later makes it difficult. Lesson learned: write the recap days not months after!)

Starting the night out with a win, Norfolk-in-Chance lost their next three matches and were looking like they were headed home after pool play. But they battled back and closed the night out going 5-1, finishing 2nd in their (weak) pool, good enough to make it to the elimination round where they matched up against last years runner-ups Jay Flemming and Jeff Gallo.  Norfolk-in-Chance won a tough match of Polish Shoes and were in the Round of 8 against Team Lussia, the notorious beer pong leaner, Mr Luke and his wild-child Lynne. Norfolk-in-Chance advanced easily. As if having to play, and defeated, two Luke’s wasn’t enough, Norfolk-in-Chance was now up against Jeff and Steve Luke. Norfolk-in-Chance put the hammer down and defeated their 3rd and 4th Luke of the night. Mrs. Luke was seen fleeing the premises and survived the night as the only Luke not to get their ass handed to him/her at beer pong that night! Norfolk-in-Chance found themselves in the finals against High-school Athletes Team TNT, Mike Thursam and Jeff Snopkowski. Jessica was not to be intimidated by two great (aged) athletes. The night was capped off when Ryan, shooting 1st, made the 6th cup leaving Jessica to shoot for the title. After a beer-fueled Snopkowski paused the match to inform Jessica that she was shooting for the match, she replied “I know!”, shot, and cashed it in for the title “2013 LukeOlympic Champions!” and the 2013 LukeOlympic MVP. Her shooting form has been talked about since and Norfolk-in-Chance is an early 2014 favorite.

Other noteworthy facts:

  • Spritzerland went 1-9 with their lone victory over Corn Queens.

  • Corn Queens were 0-10.

  • Whoville went 1-9 with their only victory over the House of Peters.

  • The House of Peters missed the elimination by 1/2 game.

  • The Hitmen, a perennial favorite, went 4-6 and missed the elimination round. They’ve been seen practicing ever since.

  • Had Lussia beaten Norfolk-in-Chance in the round of 8 they would have squared off against Sambuccastan. The crowd was glad to not see that as they wouldn’t have had a team to root for.

The Top-16:

  1. Norfolk-in-Chance (Ryan & Jessica Tracy)

  2. TNT (Mike Thursam & Jeff Snopkowski)

  3. Sambuccastan (Jeff & Steve Luke)

  4. Maestropia (Matt Copeland & Eric Adams)

2012…The Return of LukeOlympics!

2012 LukeOlympic Grand Champions: Lambda Moos (Toph & Lori O’Rourke)
Runner-Ups: Liechtenstein (Jay Flemming & Jeff Gallo)
After having one official year under our belts, we were fully aware of what the day ahead would be like: booze, food, games and fun. And all our expectations were met!

Prior to the games even beginning, we had prepared much better. A porta-potty was on site, pizza and wings were order, more beer was on stand-bye, the neighbors yards were in play and all the snacks, decorations and pageantry was set. Now for the games.

2012 saw the introduction of a new game to the LukeOlympics: Beersbee. It quickly became the game of choice as many took a liking to this new game. Things kicked off with an epic battle as two fan-favorite teams squared away: The Junkers (Whitey & Craig) vs. The Republic of Party Rock (Brenda & Adriene). The Junkers prevailed with their only win of the night. Despite not being able to stand very well, the Polish Brother from Another Mother (Jeff “Snop” & Mark) would go on to take the gold, beating Wheat Kings (Luke & Murphy). In Polish Horseshoes, last years winners Lambda Moos (Toph & Lori) were knocked out in the 1st round by Team Schuster. That lead to another visit to a finals by Wheat Kings who would again lose in the finals, this time to Lussia (Lynne & Mr Luke). Lawn Darts was up next and it turned out to be a sign of things to come as Lambda Moos was victorious over Lichtenstein (Flemming & Gallo). You’ll hear from these two teams again! Lambda Moos made it to another finals in Ladder Toss, but this time they were bested by Maestropia (Matt Copeland & Eric Adams). Next up Washers, which saw another finals for Lambda Moos and another loss. This time they were barely beaten by Hitmen (Stegs & Carm) in a close battle of softball pitchers with great washers form. These two teams weren’t done with one another though, in another finals match, these two teams were back at it in Kan-Jam. And unfortunately for Lambda Moss, another loss was dealt to them by Hitmen. Now the field was set for the finals.

In the final, #1 seed Lambda Moos was victorious over #8 seed Vachina (Jim Morris & Sue Ryan) who made a good showing in their first year of competition. The stone sober #4 seed Maestropia beat the defending Champions #5 seed Wheat Kings which meant we would see a new champion crowned. Last year’s runner ups #2 seed Hitmen were sent packing by #7 seed Lichtenstein. #3 seed Lussia defeated #6 Polish Brothers to finish out the first round of the finals. Lambda Moos, who by this team was 1/2 in the bag, defeated Maestropia, making all the drinkers at the games proud. And in the other semis-match, Lichtenstein sent the controversial leaners of Lussia home. And in the final game of the night, with the bragging rights up for grabs, Lambda Moos got their revenge from earlier in the night and won the 2012 LukeOlympics. It was an impressive victory and a great night for the couple from NT who appeared in an unprecedented 4 event finals, won one, won the finals and won the 50/50 raffle! They are definitely the favorites heading into 2013.

After the trophies were given out, and the winnings were collected, the night was over…well not for everyone. After the many of the participants departed we found ourselves on the back deck being entertained by Carm. Not sure when it completely ended but it did when Carm took off to find out where the music from a mystery location was coming from.

  • #9 seed finishers Team Bye, missing the finals by a single victory, was knocked out by #5 seed Wheat Kings twice. Had one of those games gone their way, they would have made it to the finals.

  • Heavily favored House of Peters failed to make it to a single finals, eliminated in the 1st round once and the 2nd round twice!

  • St. Bitchenstein is the only two-time participant to not record a single point!

  • Thank you to the neighbors for participating this year. While you didn’t fair so well your lawns came in handy.

2011…The Inaugural Year!

LukeOlympic Grand Champions: Wheat Kings (Jeff Luke/Chris Murphy)
Runner-Ups: Men of Steel (Matt Dorr/Anthony Mirabella/Whitey Ondak)
The day started not knowing how the first annual LukeOlympics would play out, but it ended how everyone had feared it would.

The “athletes” started to stroll in around 2:00 and the games kicked off just about as scheduled at 3:00. Several upsets occurred right off the bat with Wheat Kings losing their first two events which they were favored heavily in. Losing to Poland in Lawn Darts and a pregnant-lead Kelly and Killer Cupcakes in Polish Horse Shoes. Men of Steel lost one of its team members to injury when Whitey pulled a hammy throwing in a bean bag in a dramatic lose to Vatican City, who would go on and claim victory over a heavily inebriated Jeff Snopkowski and Team Poland in Polish Horse Shoes. That would be one of three second place finishes for Poland as they took home the silver in Polish Horse Shoes, Lawn Darts and Kan Jam. Lussia, a two-time silver medalist, couldn’t take down Vatican City in Washers or Wheat Kings in the last of the individual events of the night Ladder Toss. Vatican City was the only two-time individual event winning team taking home the title in Polish Horse Shoes and Washers, which they were heavily favored to win given their Washers experience. Team Freedonia took the slow paced Boccee Ball title from Tiger Blood where blood was nearly drawn as a bocce ball nearly hit a fans head as she streaked the court.

After all the individual events were played the field of eight was still not set. The seven-seed Killer Cupcakes had to bow out early due to a drained, pregnant, member having had enough. This gave way to the Men of Steel coming in as the 8-seed. In another odd turn of events, due to injury Whitey Ondak had to leave the Men of Steel, which lead to Matt turning to Anthony Mirabella to fill-in for his departed partner. After all this, the field was now set.

In the finals, the #1 seed Poland would lose the  first match to #7 seed Big Boned. Poland claimed to have been shooting at 12-cups but it was just them seeing double; Then the #4 seed House of Peters lost to #6 seed Wheat Kings despite House of Peters only consuming water throughout the day; then came another victory by #2 seed Vatican City, defeating #5 Freedonia. Bill had no problems with that as he had had enough sun and fun and left immediately after; The #3 seed Lussia was downed handedly by the #8 seed New Men of Steel. Always a gracious loser, Mr. Luke blamed his daughter in defeat; In second round action, Wheat Kings then defeated Big Boned who was claiming rules violation, having never played the NT way; The New Men of Steel upset Vatican City to set up the finally between Wheat Kings and the New Men of Steel; In the finally, Wheat Kings took an early lead and would go on to an easy victory, taking home the inaugural LukeOlymipcs championship.

The day was over and good times were said to be had by all.
